Problems on last day of treatment.

Hey I’ve been on a 7 day course of triple theropy to eradicate HP. The treatment I was prescribed was 40mg of omeprazole, 500mg of Amoxicillin twice a day and 500mg of Clarithromycin twice a day. I’m now about to start my final day of treatment and have experienced no improvement in my symptoms. Is this normal or should I be feeling a lot better by now? The symptoms I experience are constant burping and bloating all day as well as pains on the right of my chest and occasionally the back. Will I have to wait till after my treatment has finished till I experience any benefits?

I should also mention that with regards do Omeprazole I have taking this drug in the past to help with acid reflux and found that it doesn’t really agree with me. Due to my past experiences I have only been taking 20mg of Omperazole during my treatment. Was it a mistake not taking the full dose of Omeprazole?

Also before I started the treatment I was warned that there would be a lot of side effects and have hardly experienced any apart from the pain in my chest and back. Does this mean that the antibiotics are probably not working?

So far I have been really disappointed with the results of the treatment because after having problems for nearly a year and finally having the HP diagnosed I was hoping this would be the end of my problems.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,first of all i am no expert to answer your question. I suffer from HP(inactive duodenal ulcer) too and had the 7 seven day triple treatment. I have not had any side effects apart that i was tired during the whole course, almost zero pain since day one of the treatment(23 march2010) .
Good luck.

Hi, I hope it works but I have to say that you should NEVER decrease the dose of omeprazole. Double dose is best! It makes the antibiotics work better. Fingers crossed.
Regards symptoms. If you had the same symptoms even on treatment, maybe Hp is not the cause. For about half the treated patients, gradual improvement in the months after treatment does occur. Duodenal ulcer patients usually notice immediate results. So, if breath test is negative one month later but you are unchanged, try a different acid pump blocker. For example - Pariet 20 mg bid. If no effect after two more weeks then go and see a GI specialist and consider an endoscopy.
